White Coat Woman Resources

As one of the top nursing blogs, it is my duty to provide great content and resources.  Please feel free to share this curated resource list with your own new nurses blog, nurse practitioner blog, nursing blog sites, school nurse blogs, nursing blogs for nursing students, and/or pediatric nursing blogs.  My goal is for this to be one of the best nursing websites and best nursing blog site.  Please provide your feedback in the comments.

Please see the disclaimer tab. Below are my favorite online resources.  These resources have helped me and continue to help me be the best advocate I can for myself and my family.  Click the link to be taken directly to the corresponding site.

  1. Toll-Free Numbers for Health Information – This is easily my favorite link.  You can sort the list by HEALTH TOPIC or by ORGANIZATION NAME.  There are dozens and dozens on this list and it’s a great place to start when you want to get somebody on the phone to find out health related information.
  2.  MedlinePlus – They tout this as the world’s largest medical library.  You can find out about , diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language that anyone can understand. Moreover, patients can use MedlinePlus to learn about the latest treatments, look up information on a drug or supplement, find out the meanings of words, or view medical videos or illustrations. Patients can also get links to the latest medical research on their conditions or find out about clinical trials.
  3.  National Institutes of Health (NIH) – The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. Thanks in large part to NIH-funded medical research, Americans today are living longer and healthier. Life expectancy in the United States has jumped from 47 years in 1900 to 78 years as reported in 2009, and disability in people over age 65 has dropped dramatically in the past 3 decades. In recent years, nationwide rates of new diagnoses and deaths from all cancers combined have fallen significantly.
  4. Drugs.com – One of my all time favorite to quickly find out info about any drugs. This site helps patients better understand how medicines work: their uses, side effects and potential to interact with other medicines. VERY IMPORTANT AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED.  One of the best things: Drugs.com is also available in the form of various apps: Drugs.com Medication Guide, Pill Identifier App and a Pill Reminder App.
  5. Mayo Clinic – Mayo clinic is hands down one of the top health care places in THE WORLD.  From the beginning of the year until August, 1.3 million people from all 50 states and 140 countries came to Mayo Clinic for care already. Its website provides detailed information about medical conditions and diseases – by browsing through hundreds of disease descriptions or by characterizing the illness in the Symptom Checker. Also, more than 3,300 physicians, scientists and researchers from Mayo Clinic share their expertise to empower patients through their shared research. Content includes definitions, symptoms, causes, risk factors, complications, tests and diagnosis, treatments and drugs, prevention and support options.
  6.  Office on Women’s Health – coordinates women’s health efforts across HHS and addresses critical women’s health issues by informing and advancing policies, educating health care professionals and consumers, and supporting innovative programs.  One of my favorite sections is the Programs and Activities section and they focus all on women’s health care.
  7.  Uptodate.com – This currently and still will be my most favorite clinical support site.  UpToDate is the only clinical decision support resource associated with improved outcomes.  More than 80 research studies demonstrate its impact on improved patient care and hospital performance. SO IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW ALONG OR MAYBE EVEN CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR PROVIDER IS AWARE OF THE MOST CURRENT EVIDENCE BASED TREATMENT OPTIONS for your condition…There’s your sign!
  8.  KidsHealth – This site is very comprehensive.  From new to seasoned parents, you will find great information to help you with kids health and development.  The site has sections for parents, kids, and teens.  Their goal is to help parents, kids, and teens take charge of their health.

Here’s what you’ll find on KidsHealth.org:  Doctor-reviewed advice on hundreds of physical, emotional, and behavioral topics — from before birth through the teen years.  Separate sections for parents, kids, and teens, each created with your questions in mind.  Easy-to-follow articles, slideshows, videos, and health tools designed to help families learn, grow, and be their best.  Free lesson plans and programs for teachers and early childhood educators.

  9.  FamilyDoctor.org – A phenomenal interactive and nicely designed site. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS IS THE NEIGHBORHOOD NAVIGATOR.  Neighborhood Navigator is an interactive tool that connects you to community resources and programs in your neighborhood. With more than 40,000 social services listed by zip code, you can find local services related to: Food Housing Transportation Employment aid Legal.  This is easily one of the most user friendly resourceful sites.
  10.  Healthgrades – Healthgrades is the leading online resource for patients to find and connect with the right doctor or hospital. We help about a million people a day find and connect with healthcare providers. You can search for top-rated doctors or hospitals on our site, read what other patients have to say about them, and book an appointment. We also have a large library of slideshows, articles and videos to help you learn more about the specific condition you have or the procedure you need.
